This chune feature Ash Tray on backing vox. It took me a while to finish this track because I asked other girls to do this track and it never materialised. Some people are super DIY until it actually comes to doing something yourself or helping somebody else out. They would much prefer to find a husker du shirt on e bay for 50 quid then be on my tune.

This song was recorded in the good old Union City Studios, for a while a small corner of Dalston was truly ours. While they stroked there hair and smoked cheap cigarettes at the Dalston Superstore, we drank some tins on the other side of the street watching the freak show go by.

Anyway, besides that, we had a studio space where Black Time, Black Mamba Beat, Wake Up Dead and other projects got to record. This is a song from my own (stix, chief, ballbag) project, Work That Skirt and was recorded following a cancelled a Black Time practice. Upon hearing this, I went to Lowdown's and proceeded to drink some beer and partake in some ganja (blatant cool points for mentioning intoxication). It was the morning but it was Saturday, what else was there to do? Anyway, I had, had an idea for a song bubbling in my head so I suggested we went down to Union City and lay it down. This is the result the line up consists of myself on guitar, drums and vox and lowdown on bass and second guitar. The vocals were incidentally recorded later on Christmas day where I had the house to myself so was able to cook a roast drink some Kilpdrift (SA brandy) smoke some ganja (blatant cool points for mentioning intoxication), cook a roast and lay down some vox in the toilet.

On that note the result of all this rambling.....

You can be apathetic and bemoan the current state of music, you can hate certain bands and spend endless hours wondering how they got signed and why you still working a shit day job and having someone run your time, money and weekday-office-hours life.

Fortunately there is a solution: put on bands you like and organise your own night.

Shabeen Scene has flirted with this format for a while now but think we hit our stride this year if Sunday was anything to go by. This idea was spear headed by Space Rat and hats off to the idea that became a reality. It’s a simple formulae: book bands, charge people to watch and you make money to pay bands and expenses and the venue makes money from punks at the bar. This doesn’t always happen in practice and maybe we have been lucky but Sunday ruled and apathy diminished (for now).

Seven bands were booked which can seem like a logistical nightmare but everyone was cool and no one ran over there allotted slot with prog-rock-induced-5-minute-bass-solos or anything of that excessive nature.

LEFT LEG were on first, they are fronted by Aaron from the now defunct BLOODY KNEES and SAD SHIELDS (also X-members of). They kick out a cool mix of Unwound-style drone and tight, angular Warmers/Circus Lupus-esque riffs and arrangements; Aaron's singing really stands out too and gives the music an awesome tone and atmosphere. We really look forward to more from this band.

Next on were BIRD CALLS. We've all seen this band live a few times in 2010 and they were always awesome but had compliments and accolades changed them, would they succumb to losing the bite in material or making excessive rider demands? No, not a chance, just consistent, abrasive and catchy, modern post-hardcore jams the way it should be done. I’m sure there is a bunch of bands that could be referenced but the arrangements and dynamics of the songs are awesome and powerful enough so why reference when they cutting their own niche? Nice guys playing good rock 'n' roll.

Following Bird Calls was another new band for 2011, GOOD THROB - sporting the punk rock chameleon, Louis of Shitty Limits, Love Triangle and NO, etc fame; leave him in a room with some punks and beer and a band will be formed. This time he’s taking charge from the back, leading the beat on the skins alongside Big Take Over and The Sceptres famed Bryony on chainsaw along with Ash on short-scale bass and Ellie on art-school/vocal duties. The Good Throbbers put the throb on good and although they're still a bit rusty and rough round the edges, the essential music is great. We got to see them play again on Tuesday and in a few days they seemed a lot tighter. Their sound is nice and dark, loads of feedback and cranked out intros into blasts of energetic noise-punk. Hopefully this will fill the vacuum that will be left with Josh’s departure to Berlin therefore less Love Triangle gigs.

After this we / BLACK MAMBA BEAT played, it was great and we got to showcase some new material. It went down well and I talked some shit (as usual) especially calling Josh from Love Triangle 'Craig Nicholls from The Vines' due to his Ozzie-grunge-connection? …stupid shit I know but it got a giggle.

After playing the gig I was hot and sweaty and went upstairs to chill out. There I met a couple who came down from Cambridge to see the gig; they had picked up our LP at All Ages Records because they liked the cover art. It was really awesome to hear this and it is the reason why the first part of this article references apathy because when good things like this happen, things that are beyond marketing and free downloads, it makes you feel good and you know you on the right path. Anyway while chatting to this couple which turned into a discussions on global economics, I missed both Saturday's Kids and Sauna Youth. This is a particular point of embarrassment as it turns out I knew the singer Rich from way back when I first moved to London. Anyway we bro-ed down before the gig and I returned the favour by missing his gig. Apologies to you Rich, I listened to the tape and it fucken rules (I’m not just saying that).

Anyway luckily the real punk and organiser Space Rat was there to witness all so he can tell you about dat......

Yea, big up m'self! Sauna Youth killed it live too, they had the whole crowd boppin' to their infectious punk-rawk-pop choons with cool psyched out bits too. Again, such raw energy is so refreshing. I have wanted to get these dudes to play the minute I heard their recordings. True UK-DIY punk rock, keeping it real with righteous vibes. Thanks guys!

Saturday's Kids got to the venue in the nick of time just before they had to go on, unfortunately Ryan's bars' sweaty pit of a basement cleared out a bit right before they started playing and they played a really short set too. They had also played with Sauna Youth the night before in Brighton and with Good Throb and The Love Triangle the night before that in Kingston. They're 4 young lads from Wales who seem to be super proactive, musically they fuse genres in a good way making them difficult to pin down though exciting at the same time, definitely a dark, early DC-sound happening, equal doses of melody and noise.

The Chief returned to catch the end of THE LOVE TRIANGLE set (The Rat was there from the get go) which was the perfect closer for the evening. All embraced in TLT spit, beer, punk. Go see these guys live before the bass player Josh (Craig Nicholls) departs or catch them when he’s back. Catchy, power-pop-garage-punk (to generalise), melodic and all that jazz (and blues too). I somehow feel I am in the presence of a very important part of punk rock history whenever these dudes perform or maybe not.

Special mention also goes to Kimberley, who came all the way down from Buckinghamshire! Thanks for the effort we appreciate it! Another bullet for the apathy mind set.

Escapade 1:

Involving the liege of D.I. and DIE culture namely HRH Bryony (although being Welsh, she might not take to the royal title). Bryony invited us to play one of the best things going in London at the moment, namely a BIG TAKE OVER show. This BTO was going to be held at The Hayward Gallery and sounded like a lot of fun, another weird gig to store in the memory banks. Unfortunately certain punk patrons of the “collective zine forum” thought otherwise, according to them it was 'un-punk and very bourgeois' to have even thought of playing an art gallery. Never the less liege Bryony pushed these critiques aside and we arrived on Saturday afternoon to set up and play...

It is always amazing how before a gig like Big Take Over you wait in the strangest of places, at strange times, wondering if anyone will turn up ?????
But then to the left you see some flannel, to the right a mohawk and in the distance the faint glint of a can of Strong Bow. If Bryony books it the punks will come and the freaks and weirdo’s will all come. Within an hour the upstairs balcony where we played was packed and so was the downstairs 'non-VIP area'. All clichés sprang to mind The Beatles on top of Apple's offices, Strummer on the Thames. Basically it was a fucking awesome gig and I had to kick myself while I was playing, looking out at people in front of me, below me as well as London buses and tour buses going past. Wherever possible I would lift my guitar and give them a face melting lead, until Rosie pointed out I was acting like Brian May! ……..OOOOOH ….. On that note we finished and made way for some noise dudes (Haxan Cloak) which was rad and freaked the fuck out of some the usual cream scone brigade that frequent Southbank for an afternoon of sun and culture with their horror-movie-soundtrack/soundscapes. And then, after them, were the awesome Love Triangle, consisting of newly graduated nurse and Shitty Limits spitter, Louis and drummer, Tim with their Aussie buddy/Depp look-a-like? bass player, Josh. What can you write about a band with hooks this tight, just get out there and see them live, straight-up foot tapping, fast rhythm'n'blues, power-pop punk rock and cool party lyrics, forget your job and drink some beer!

Escapade 2:

This involved going to see Human Hair in trendy dickhead breeding Old Street around midnight at El Paso/South of the Border the following Saturday. What a sight to behold sitting on a step on the street in Old Street watching the dickheads, clowns and Essex lads out on the pull go past. If you bored and fancy a cheap night out part take in this, you will not be disappointed. Due to the afore mentioned captivating event we only really came to see Human Hair but caught the last part of Bitches set, which was mainly centred on comedy hour (singer talking crap, telling personal jokes that was only funny to a select few or maybe he was just drunk and taking the piss too?), good thing Space Rat yelled out 'play a fucking song!', to voice our opinion on the comedy hour. Once the comedians left stage Human Hair proceeded to fuck shit up!!!!! It did take a while for them to set-up and work out a few bugs but once in full flight it was an awesome spectacle. Tight drums in the back, a noisy fucked guitar to one side, Henry's effects/keyboard/samples-krautrock-Pavement slop to the other and Jack summoning fire and brimstone, well as much fire and brimstone he could summon in those small denim panties short things …. anyway that didn’t matter cause as a unit they were rocking. It was so hot down there and everyone was sweating it up but no one left not until the Human Hair sermon was over. My personal fav was the 2nd to last song which I believe will be out on Sex Is Disgusting Records soon and is called “Holiday” or “Vacation”, something like that. It had a real cool memorable 'shout-at-your-manager' chorus and rockin' Piña Colada rhythms. Good show lads, Shabeen Scene applauds you.

First off when confronted with the glaring realisation that your band is not getting the cool shows it's easy to slip into "hate the hipsters" apathy. Thankfully we didn't do this and managed to have awesome release party at Ryan's! Thanks so much to all who came, drank Cane and got fucked up, someone even left in a fucking ambulance!! If we were N-Dubz or Kings Of Leon, that would have been some awesome PR fodder.

In terms of makin your own cool parties and not being an apathetic prick, the award for non-apathetic prick goes to BIG TAKE OVER's star organiser, Bryony. We've had the esteemed fortune to play two of these nights, the 1st was BYOB (bring your own booze for the thick readers) and we got some £'s and so did the charity it supported. I don't know how Bryony does it but she always organises some of the best parties going. Besides the fact that its usually BYOB, I always get a kick out of the varied punk miscreant clientele - SxE gym boys, flannel-clad nerds, hardcore studded drunk-punx and everything in between is all there. The word "scene" get lorded over in music mags but this is not so much a scene that one can classify more a collection of people curious to see new bands in a different setting and yes, bringing there own booze. In short thanks for providing some great nights and we look forward to many more, next cider's on us....

In other news check out this band called BIRD CALLS, a swipe of references would include Minutemen, Fugazi, caP'n Jazz and Hoover/June of 44. Great foot rapping, flannel-clad screaming/spoken/singing, 90's rock and roll.

As some of you might know I now also fill the drum stool for Thee Exciters, we played our first gig in their hometown of Southampton at a place called Hampton’s. The preparation for the gig was one recording session and one rehearsal, regardless we were confident, it’s only rock'n'roll and beer was being drunk so it would be a spectacle none the less.

The crowd awaited with beer brains and baited breath and we set up drums, guitars, vocal pedal and oscillator (psyche out!). Paul Brock the shaman front man pulled people to the front and from the first verse the crowd was with us, girls grooving and boys jumping. It was a great mix of people and all of them nicely pissed and rocking to the beats, shaking off the working weeks drudgery. In the last song, which was a cover of Frank Zappa's “Willy the Pimp”, the shaman front man, disrobed, put his Southampton sausage between his legs and went to embrace his adoring crowd like a acid head in Woodstock. Unfortunately after doing this he proceeded to twiddle his vocal pedal knobs, which left me as the drummer, with a view of his naked arse and what can only be described as a be-headed turkey neck poking out from underneath his arse i.e.: his cock. A fitting end to a rocking gig!!!

The following day we travelled down to London for the mod festival known as Beat Bespoke. Unfortunately I brought the wrong outfit and instead of some Liam Gallagher pretty green clobber, I was wearing double denim (denim jacket and jeans) and a Metallica shirt citing the phrase “Metal Up Your ASS!”. This fashion faux pas was immediately felt when playing the gig, it was like playing to a bunch of disapproving Liam Gallagher and Paul Weller cardboard cutouts. The general crowd had as much atmosphere as a rusty scooter, actually rusty scooter sounds pretty cool and metal, so let's just say the crowd was boring. We ended the set to a half arsed applause from the mojo cardboard cut outs and some woman yelling

“£6 for 10 minutes what a rip off!”

Unfortunately we didn’t inform her when we were starting and how long we would play for. Would-be-bands take note always inform people you’ve never met how long you going to play for and make accommodations for them when they turn up or else they could call the front man a “shit head”.

The evening did end on a good note as I got to see one of the best garage/freak/fucked up/psycho shit around: Wau Los Arrrghs. Damn did they fucking rule even thought it was a big venue with big shitty sound. Everything fits and works perfectly the band is super tight and the singer fucked up. Not like oh I've done soooo much smack fucked up more like stage movements and vocal noises fucked up just fucked up go find them on the internet to see what I'm talking about.

Let me put it this way there was a mosh pit at the front of the mod fest (much to the disgust of the Liam and Weller Mojo cutouts) fucking ruled.

After that the Polecats played and I didn’t catch much just saw some old Billy jumping around with bleach burnt hair (colour of chlorine )jumping around in Rockabilly looking pyjamas. Word on the street was some of the Spanish Wau los arrghs moshing contingent tried to join in with the square dancing segment of the show but were disapprovingly nudged out .

In conclusion I had my fun but who know music created with the angst and freedom of youth has now developed such boundaries no amateur square dancing at rockabilly gigs, no Metallica shirts at mod fests, what’s next only studded jackets at 77 punk gigs?

BLACK MAMBA BEAT! DEBUT RELEASE!!

Sometimes in band you have moments where it all makes sense and your purpose is made clear, this eventually gives way to apathy but at least for a little while it all makes sense.

For Black Mamba Beat we had our first rehearsal, where we weren't sure if it would work? if the bass player could keep time? if I could get over my shyness and try to sing somehow near Fogerty? Once that was established we started writing songs and were making our way to our first nerve-racking gig and the ecstatic blissful moment that followed afterwards we had arrived ......

After that we set about getting a 4-track and recording our own music (I had been in a few bands where you play shit gigs for 2 years and record 4 songs for £500, not economical, innit). Recordings were a learning curve for both myself and the band as we got to grips with basic production techinques.

We then set about playing our first show outside of English soil at the festival known as Prickly Pea Bowls organised by Oli and Luca and many other Italian minions. We packed up some tapes, maybe sold 5 but thankfully Tina and Marco from Jeet Kune Records got our CD-R and tape and liked what they heard. This here is the most important thing for me and the mambas, it was a very organic process and when we got back to England they told us they wanted to do a LP!!!!! not a 45, not a tape, not a CD-R or exclusive download, a FUCKING LP !!!!!!!!!

We were so touched that they heard something within our humble rawkus rock. Many e-mails went back and forth organising master CD's and finalising album artwork but now the record is finally here in our hands and we are so happy and so proud, we have no children but we have come close to childbirth, the combined gene pool of our influences and lives......

LAST NIGHT JAMES CHANCE SAVED MY LIFE IN THE VICTORIA MILE END

Last night I came close to seeing something I could never see: Jazz music played wild and free, the pioneer of No-Wave, conducting one of the sharpest rhythm sections I have ever seen and someone trying to embody an iota of the greatness left by the great James Brown. This was James Chance and he fucked up Mile End. There's a plaque on a bridge down the road showing where the first bombs fell in World War II, James Chance's performance implanted a plaque on my mind that I saw the great man and again reminded of how hard performers work and worked in those old days.

My old band mate Victor rang me up after Wake Up Dead practice to tell me he had a spare ticket for ££%$ (I couldn't make it out, hes Portuguese and I had started drinking) however when I understood he meant James Chance and The Contortionists or Les Contortions, I hesitated for a second and confirmed it was fucking on!

So there we waited, in the front, waiting to be schooled in how to be a musician. The cheers began and the man was on stage in a suit and holding what looked like a white russian, taking his time and immediately telling the DJ person:

"Play two more songs"

The "no bullshit" persona was already established and then he classily took his time getting the reeds out, adjusting, getting it all together so when count started, we were off, no hitches.

Then he sat at the keyboard

Glanced at the band .....

A one A two A one two three four...

BOOM!!!!!!!!!!!!! bass, guitar and drums all in together tight but angular jerkin rhythms and fucked up keyboard noises.

This immediately sounds like the write up for some shit D.I.Y.-by-numbers Dalston band but how many bands try this formulae and how many fuck it up. Art school might entitle you to mohair cardigans and skin head bleached fringe haircuts but it won't teach you how to play tight drums and tight bass lines ...... anyway rant aside back to more important things.

After Mr Chance was done blowing minds with backing band fucked rhythms and fucked keyboard sounds he picked up that mother fucking sax and blasted forth a cacophony of notes and sounds. Your legs and body are working hard to the rhythms then that sax makes your brain go FUCK ME THIS RULES !!!!!
My immediate thought ounce I had resuscitated my senses was that this is what it must have been like when you first saw Coltrane or the bird doing do-wop. Then the sugar on top the moves .....Yes he may be older than us but in his suit and sax he saunters up to the mic shouts like a deranged beatnik poet but manages to to also do some spins and leg shakes, not quite MoTown but not embarrassing either, cause making music like that you would be shakin' in a frenzy not looking moody. Third song in he was in the front of the crowd screaming in some girl's face, sounds weird but it worked (hahaha), and she was loving it. Then we got some great Chance marketing spiel i.e. he mumbled about the fact they got a new album out and said

"This will get you started"

Then threw a CD, ninja star style into the roof a big round of laughter ensued hahahaha.

One of the most stand out things with James Chance is his ability to lead the band through swift hand signals. With one flick of his hand the band would be so quiet you could hear the murmur of the crowd. When he went into a James Brown cover "King Heroin" he got the band started off low and started singing so heartful, so soulful.
Problem was the twats in the back where to busy talking about their coked-up weekend and being so wasted etc etc, whilst us in the front hung to on to the mans' words frustrated at the ignorance but the lord giveth.

James Chance yelled:

"SHUT THE FUCK UP! THIS IS IMPORTANT TO ME! I DON'T WANT TO HEAR YOUR CONVERSATION! I'M STARTING AGAIN!!"

And, he did...
a fucking master stroke, I smiled with glee and got transfixed on the cover it was incredible, goosebumps galore and to top it off in the final freak-out outro he shoved the mic in the saxophone (the horn bit where the noise comes out)

WWWWWAAAAAAA WEEEEEEEEEE BBBAAAAA BBBLLLLLLL WWWWWWEEEE WAAAAAAA !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (that's a saxophone freak-out, not a new band name)

He then explained that they would forgo the cliched band on and off stage encore and this was the last one and after one more bout of education the group was gone and my mind was blown. Work today has been filled with flashes from last night and the smile on my face eradicates any possible hangover.

An Evening with Trash Kit, Male Bonding and The Vivian Girls

I was presented with the opportunity to go see the Vivian Girls, a band I had not seen for about a year and was intrigued to see them again. Intrigued due to digging some of there recent songs and seeing how there performance was after countless tours.

The venue was in a church just off Dalton Lane and organised by “Upset The Rhythm”. The actual venue was pretty big and awesome like a big scout hall or something. There was an abundance of reverb in two of the evening’s performances, so I could not tell whether this had a positive or negative effect on the sound. Regardless it was well attended and the BYOB option was very healthy on one and all's pockets. Even though some punk dressed man and his girlfriend managed to catch a black cab to the gig, so I don’t think they were bothered.

The first band on was Trash Kit a favourite of mine both in music and personality. Needless to say they ruled again and I await the album on Upset The Rhythm. This is a group of girls who go from minimal tribal like chants to jerking post-punk rhythms in the beat of the djembe.

Go see them you arsehole!!!!!!!!!

Male Bonding is not a favourite of mine so I'll let there press release and wikipedia snippets provide the fodder to fill this article.

Made up of Robin Silas Christian (drums), John Arthur Webb (guitar & vocals) and Kevin Hendrick (bass and vocals), and rising from a flourishing DIY scene in their adopted hometown of Dalston, London, Male Bonding became a very real thing in May, 2008, with their first show, at an insane house party called “RAGE!” Male Bonding was born raging and it’s been non-stop ever since. That party evolved in to a split 7” release with PENS on Male Bonding’s own label Paradise Vendors Inc. (which sold out in a week). To date, Male Bonding has dispatched seven releases including a Flipper tribute 7” (on Domino Records) alongside PPM Allstars, Lovvers and Ponytail. The band has toured the UK with Brooklyn’s Vivian Girls and played shows with Lovvers, HEALTH, Fucked Up, Graffiti Island, Mika Miko, These are Powers, NISENNENMONDAI, Magik Markers, and Finally Punk among others. Reverberation is the persistence of sound in a particular space after the original sound is removed.[1] A reverberation, or reverb, is created when a sound is produced in an enclosed space causing a large number of echoes to build up and then slowly decay as the sound is absorbed by the walls and air.[2] This is most noticeable when the sound source stops but the reflections continue, decreasing in amplitude, until they can no longer be heard. The length of this sound decay, or reverberation time, receives special consideration in the architectural design of large chambers, which need to have specific reverberation times to achieve optimum performance for their intended activity.[3]

Speaking of reverb this brings me to tonight’s head liner namely The Vivian Girls will I was hoping to be awash with shoegaze psychedelia sending me into a euphoric trance however this was not the case. I found the performance to be a bit of a damp squid. This could have been down to the natural reverb in the hall clashing with the digital reverb coming from the band but it seemed to be swishing and washing and kaplooshing all over the place. With that said massive props go to the A'Capella song they did, it was fantastic, so good in fact some patron yelped in excitement. I don’t really know much but I would suggest they start with this one so as to have the crowd in there hand and then hit them with the instruments.

So in a nutshell, it started off OK (this could be down to sound issues, as I heard the singer complaining she couldn’t hear), the a'capella bit nailed it and then it kind of tailed off, well actually I left before they finished.

So there you go an evening of cheap booze and reverb but better than a poke in the eye.

THE GOLDEN BOYS

It’s always great when a band you already love goes and blows your mind again. I first saw these Boys in Columbus, Ohio, where they played to 5 locals, The Spider Bags and Black Time, and still they rocked it, rocked it like The Boss at Yankee Stadium. After their performance I purchased as much merch as possible, 3 cd’s and a t-shirt (alligator with a ghetto Golden Boys chain ???). Fast forward to October '09 and I was looking forward to them playing Budget Rock.......

But would my own hype get in the way of them putting on another stellar performance?

Was it a one off??......

The answer a resounding FUCK NO!!!!!!!!!

For starters, the key board player had a cymbal on a drum stick, which he would bash when the heavy bits kicked in and this was on the 1st song! It was like the garage equivalent of the “Glory Days” video, just dudes rocking out and drinking beer. After the show I purchased their new LP, which is out on Daggerman called 'Thee Electric Wolfman' and it didn’t leave the turntable for at least 2 weeks. Other notable albums of their's I own include 'Scorpion Stomp #2' (Perpetrator) and 'Goodbye Country' (Hook Or Crook Records). If you like getting drunk, rockin', Friday night's and Sunday blues, you need to listen to The Golden Boys.

THE MAGENTIX

I ain't seen these guys in VICE yet but I do know they fucking rule! Without hearing the music all you have have to know is Loosh Vibrato’s summation of his role in rock n roll:

"I am the Rock n Roll monster and I roam around France picking people up and saying, 'hey you! it's Rock n Roll or nothing!!!'

The rock n roll monster and his partner in rock, Aggie Sonora, are complete GODzillas on stage. Loosh will try play through as many amps the venue can provide, while Aggie provides the back beat his fucked up fuzz guitar licks need. In order to sum up their sound and swagger, I would say it’s a good mix of The Gories' primitive rock and all delivered with continental flair coming from a French rock n roll monster raised on comic books and rock.

Their latest album 'Positively Negative' fucking rules with stand out tracks including the awesome acoustic and fuzz creation on "Mort Clinique", the riotous building opener "Living In A Box" which goes from quiet, single guitar chanting to wall-to-wall guitar, floor tom/snare blast, straight forward rocker motorcycle rhythm driver "HA-TNT" and finished with awesome keyboard swirling, instrumental, psychedelia of "Nonsense”. Why ain't this group big? why arn't they wearing branded sunglasses and neon scarves? I think they're more content in Bordeaux, creating this awesome sound with as many amps possible to as many or as little.

MIKA MIKO

Another band, cool as fuck live, moshin' in the tube on the way to work, great album. I got to see the progression of these LA mofo’s, from playing the small Bardens Boudoir, where they beat the telephone mic, scratched guitars and mashed up the place, anything with a pulse and some pints inside them were rocking, slam dancing and popping to the messed up sounds.

The second time I saw them they were supporting the Black Lips at The Electric Ballroom, where although on a big stage with big sound (kick drums, vocals), I got to see more of the awesome dynamic between the two front girl singers and tight as fuck rhythms lead by the awesome bass player. This gave me hope in front woman, for way too long now in London it has just been the case of "outrageous" Dalstonites screaming into a mic on the floor in the painful enema receiving position. Not so with the Mika Miko girls, they got sass and the only thing to do with arses in their performance is your's shakin' to the shit they create and spit.

As for the new/final/swansong album, "We Be XUXA", what a fucking masterpiece!! You know it’s great when you gotta stop yourself from listening in case you kill the chunes, but some, cannot be killed. Like a sonic version of The Highlander, unless you get your head chopped off you cannot kill these chunes. I personally like it cause I hear some of my favourite bands in there. 'Blues Not Speed' has got a Germs and X thing going on 'Turkey Sandwich' and 'Totion' evokes the party fun vibes reminiscent in B-52’s, The Go-Go’s and jerky rhythms of Teenage Jesus And The Jerks as well as The Slits. Special mention goes to the track 'Beat The Rush', where the opening vocal...

“ARRound HEERRRre….”

Gets me every time, so much so that, yes I have rewinded and played again at a higher volume. I know most reviews have mentions about the scene LA has created and all the contemporaries that have emerged and the relevance this bears to it all, but the influences I hear and the way it makes me forget about the shit day job and looming London weather they could have created this in Tasmania or Timbuktu I would still be impressed.

THE BOX ELDERS

Fresh from their fine performances at Brighton, Bardens and Ryan’s in Stoke Newington and I still got the songs in my head. I love that after seeing The Box Elders I bought the record and the songs and production didn’t disappoint. I can relive the gigs whenever I'm near the turntable and have some beers from the offie. Stand out tracks includes the sweet as fuck 'Stay' which stays in your head upon hearing it at the gig and get's better when you hear it on record with the female backing vox. 'Atlantis' is another great chune with it's building organ swell intro and tempo that changes from laid back to bouncing in a minute. The clincher in nearly all Box Elders' songs are the harmonies, after hearing the album it was great to see them live again and how the vocal harmonies of Clayton and Jeremiah played off one another (this sounds like an incredibly pretentious spin mag, pitchfork, NME description but you gotta see to hear and see). A lot of people will give this the whole 60's moniker but I just see it as really catchy awesome music.

Ty Segall/Traditional Fools

I group these two together because they pretty much part of the same ilk and both incarnations have blown me away. The Traditional Fools are still making weekly rotations on the turntable after I received it last February. I was immediately hooked by the Billy Childish cover (I don’t want to hear the original so as not to tarnish this gem from my sonic memory), this was followed by the skate trick named 'Layback', which is handy listening before a skate sesh. The other track which stood out for me is the Redd Kross cover 'Kill Someone You Hate', with it's harsh speaker bleeding vocals and great guitar and bass breaks where it's getting whammy barred or some crazy shit. After digging these tracks I started to get into the fist pumping chant inducing 'Defender' as well as the 'Be My Baby intro' and 60's surf rocker of 'Party At My House', but after all that awesomeness the track that I think is the best and the one I think paved the way for the more Ty Segall-ish stuff is 'Get Off My Back!!!', I'm going to spare the cool sound metaphors and just say it pops into my head all the time, either the rhythm or the lyrics or both. I have Ty Segall's self-titled album (Castle Face) as well as the split with Black Time. The self-titled one immediately barbs you with 'The Drag' and once you got that ditty out of your head there’s more to follow 'Who Are You?' is an eerie, creepy cool ballad with that one man band drum beat but fuck it sounds so perfect. 'Dating' again has that one man high-hat/kick drum thing again but it fits so fucking well and forms a great bass to the straight jabbing guitar and lyrics "Suzy sez she wants to go out with you .......". The split I feel is a bit more lo-fi but man, the thing that shines through for me is the fucking rock solid drumming, I'm sure it's Ty's drumming cause when I've seen him drumming I always thought he had a Mitch Mitchell style and this rings true on this snare rolls and beats pumping. I also love the really psychedelic guitar that runs in and out of this and weird slap reverb vocals in this current reverb soaked musical climate, this gives me hope that the age old vocal technique sounds awesome. Stand out tracks include the drum snare rolling beat don’t stop of 'In Love' and the great psyche guitar chiming and Mitch mother fuckin' Mitchell banging of 'Swag'. As if I hadn’t banged on about him enough he was kind enough to give our dumb little tape label a track, so big up to him for making good music and being a cool dude, big ups to Dave the skinniest, biggest drinker in SF and Andrew the only good skater and bass saviour for Black Time on our last tour.

THE SHITTY LIMITS

These dudes just straight out fucken shread. I guess as much as we all like to list genres and stereotype bands, I feel in 2009 my eyes opened a bit more to life, and by life I mean what I experience everyday blasting noise into my skull or trying to remember the night before after getting too wasted watching bands. That was exactly how I first got exposed to the Limits, after a drunken rager at the 1st Big Take Over (amazing all ages/DIY, punk and hardcore shows for a good cause), I know these guys have been putting out 45's for a few years now and with their debut LP 'Beware The Limits', you can feel the insane passion for garage punk, hardcore punk and punk rock alike on all the releases. For me, their sound is super nostalgic of my youth, growing up skateboarding at the beach after school, trying to survive on whatever punk rock tapes we could get our hands on and shared as buddies, sound and comparison wise I'd say definitely reminiscent of MINOR THREAT and DESCENDENTS, all with a distinctly British snottiness. One of the best fucken live bands in the UK today, which says alot as there's not that many left, utter energy and speed. Their entire catalogue is downloadable for free but buy the shit, it's cheap enough if you have any kind of job at all, even part-time, you punk.... also check out their just as relevant and notable 'side-project'/members of band, THE SCEPTRES, awesomely catchy, grrrl pop bliss, led by Bryony who puts on the Big Take Over shows

HUMAN HAIR

Human Hair is a nice, interesting, little outfit from Nottingham by Henry from the better known pop-punkers LOVVERS. Now these fellas excrete summin in music that, personally, I thought had died a rancid death a decade ago. Total 90's US style, spazzy post-punk. Their 4 track 45 released on Brighton label, SEX IS DISGUSTING, is fulled with entertainingly twisted, sarcastic and humorous lyrics of wandering the streets hungover and feeling like the only freak somewhere where you wish everyone would combust into flames while eating cake and laughing, I think? Good use of instrument swapping by 2nd guitarist, key board player/drummer and the bass guitar player and front man, Jack, conjures up the fruitful, poetic exorcism. Anyways, Henry is mos def onto something here, the other dudes in the band have other bands and he has Lovvers but I heard it thru the grapevine that they are back and by fuck I hope so.

BLOODY KNEES (R.I.P.)

These dudes killed it the few times I saw them, they have sadly split up now but I have faith in new incarnations too. Live they bust out this ferociously funked up scratchy, dischordant indie-punk, akin to maybe UNWOUND, MONORCHID, NATION OF ULYSSES and CAP 'N JAZZ, with only 1 guitarist, a super hyper, flamboyant vocalist and a drummer with tight beats. They released a tape on their own label, MILK, which I haven't got, yet (if there are any left?), I still recommend checking them out.

Trash Kit - London afrobeat sisters, the best raw talent I have witnessed in a long time, funk and groove and DIY hearts, get the soon to be release debut album on Upset The Rhythm, it comes with temporary tats!

SUSPECT PARTS/Clorox Girls - pure powerpop perfection, Beach Boys meets Ramones meets Wipers

OXBOW - there is no way to describe this band but the fact you have to experience it to believe/understand I think, I thought I did until I saw them, like 1800 blues fused with disturbing, horror movie soundscapes and Zeppelin riffs, scary

NoBunny - at a seaside town on an island in the mediterranean, the soundtrack to prickly pea bowls, the poppiest lo-fi pop-punk rock on earth

Obits - ex-drive like jehu/hot snakes, my main man rick fork, rockin' riddem 'n' blooz riffs with post-punk tendencies, like Mission Of Burma jamming with The Kinks

THESE ARMS ARE SNAKES 'Tailswallower & Dove' - these guys have provided my post-hardcore, post-At The Drive-In fix for many years now, which was to be their last album (as they too have called it quits), is a modern art punk classic. Hailing from the Great Pacific North West, TAAS are the sonic equivalent of a David Lynch film. They will sadly be missed, but again hopefully more projects just as firesome evolve.

YOUNG WIDOWS 'Old Wounds' / BRAIN BANGER 'Yellow Belly' - midwest American punk rock titans, YW+BB alike, rawkous, infectious noise rock that should make The Jesus Lizard and Shellac proud. Dual vocal attack and intricate guitar, bass and drum synchronicity, and tons of distortion that warps into psychotic echo chambers in your mind.

USA Tour // Budget Rock

I was once again extremely fortunate enough to go tour with Black Time in the USA.
One of the main things learnt on this tour is that in the "arena of garage rock" one must remember if you have a girl in the band, especially if she is cute, do not deviate from this or else your likely to explain in this to every patron at every gig...
It kind of reminded me of the scene in 'There’s Something About Mary' when Ben Stiller’s character picks up a hitchhiker who tells him about his idea for 6 minute abs (a exercise programme that rivals the more popular 7 minute abs) to which Stiller’s character jokes "well that’s all good until someone invents 5 minutes abs", which leaves the hitchhiker to respond disgusted "not 5 minute abs, 6!". This is probably a very confusing analogy but let me put it into our daily context:

"Cool gig man but where’s the girl?"

"Oh she couldn’t come on this tour due to time off work and stuff"

"Sorry, where’s the girl?"

"Yea she couldn’t make it on this tour it sucks I know but we have some merch to sell "

"Is the girl on the t-shirt?"

"No it’s a scene from this movie involving this British ......."

"Really ??"

"Yea"

"Sorry I haven’t got any money, tell the girl I say hi"

Apologies in advance if this strayed into "only funny on tour scenario". So point taken if you got a girl in the band don’t let her leave or start another band. Whilst our tour this time wasn’t so well attended and we didn’t make that much dough, it was and will always be more fun than fucking work and we got to see loads of bands and meet some really great people and hang out with old friends.

One of the places we most looked foreword to playing was Tijuana, a few days prior to walking into Tijuana we were told many horror stories. The conversation would normally revolve around discussing our gigs then proudly mentioning our upcoming gig in Tijuana at which the listener would repel in fear and disgust exclaiming:

"Oh shit if your going there be careful !!!"

Needless to say upon entering Tijuana we were met by Edgard and Beatrice, who took us to some local bars and kept us out of harms way and made sure we had a super unforgettable time. Tijuana really is the city of sin and contradictis such as being able to smoke in bars where signs exclaiming 'thank you for not smoking' adorn the walls also they sell "loose"(ability to purchase a single cigarette) which I have not seen since South Africa and being a casual smoker and having someone come into the bar sell you a "loose" and light it in a place you not "supposed" to be smoking just highlights the Tijuana experience for me.

Another great experience was attending and playing Budget Rock. The main band I was excited about seeing was The Golden Boys. We played with them last year in Ohio to fuck all people but man, I was touched and bought their 3 albums and a shirt and those albums have got me through many beers and heart jerkin moments. So it was with great anticipation I watched and waited for there gig and fuck me did they come on and tear the roof off!! So simple to write but so hard to describe just good rock'n'roll, it's like if you're really drunk and one of your favourite songs come on and you lose any remaining inhibitions and go fucking mental, I think that’s the best way to sum up the gig if you're sober your drunk on the energy, if you're drunk it makes you remember why you always getting drunk. They have a new album out on Daggerman Records called "THEE ELECTRIC WOLFMAN", I highly recommend it. The following Saturday was the great and one of personal highlights included The Brentwood’s, this was one of those classic cases where you don’t know anything about a band i.e.: I didn’t know anything about their legendary status etc, but they completely won me over, one of the funniest fucking party bands ever. It was all there the hooks the moves, the dumbness and budget vibe. Prior to seeing The Brentwood’s, I got to see another band I was really looking forward to, Personal & The Pizzas, no frills here just some rehashed Ramones/Dictators shit going on and dumb lyrics but man it gets your fist pumpin' and beer chugged, awesome sing along stuff especially if you know the words and if you don’t buy the 45's and learn them ya fucking turkey! Nobunny also played on Saturday and was the headline of the day show for those who have seen Nobunny I don’t need to say anymore and for those who ain't, the hype ain't hype it's real, unless your a soulless intellectual musical snob, in other words an arsehole. The last highlight, not that anyone sucked, just highlights in my brain was The Box Elders, I had never seen them but got the 'Hole In My Head' 45 and they so great just memorable and mesmerising and again got dem motherfuckin' hooks, I don’t know if the box elder bugs have got hooks but the band's got 'em, they ended off with a cover of "Teenage Kicks", which was a awesome end to a booze-filled day. The Sunday eve show wasn’t that great in my eyes, call it too much partying, booze in my eyes but it it it it it was was was was too too too too much much much much reverb reverb reverb reverb on everything all the time it, that coupled with some shuffling stuff although having said that The Oh Sees did did did did put put put put on on on on a aa gggggreat show show show show show.

Positive Action at The Victoria

Last Saturday I went to check out one of my top fav London bands Trash Kit and to see how La La Vasquez was, by that I mean I couldn't make up my mind about them. Unfortunately La La Vasquez or one of them had had a bike accident or something (only in East London) so they couldn't play, I look forward to attending your next gig and examining your market selling potential and identifying your optimum demographic direction.

First band on was Trash Kit, who I had come to see, this band is normally always good and this time and yup, still fuckin' ruling! The best thing is now is that I know most of the songs and could clap along and semi vocalise. I await the new album with baited breath. Word on the street is it's being released in February on the "upset the rhythm" label.

Second on was a band called "bitches", now space rat from black mamba beat told me about this band and said they were great and they didn't disappoint either especially as a two piece can sometimes be really contrived and boring. These cats got a bass running through some pedals giving you loads of noise and shouty trading vocals so simple but all good.

Last on was a band called "Vile Vile Creatures", I only got to see two songs cause I started the drinking early and was beginning to flag, so only saw 2 songs but again what I heard was cool and I would have defiantly stuck around for more if I wasn't so lame.

The evening was centered around raising money for a local charity "U-Turn" which works with hard to reach women who are homeless/rough sleepers and coerced into prostitution. This made the evening a bit more worthwhile than just a typical London gig and between bands a speaker from the charity spoke and there was also two poets who read some prose. Although I didn't understand what some of the poets were talking about it was still a breath of fresh air. Compared to countless blogspot, facebook, myspace events giving you the best in "DIY talent" sponsored by "LA shades", pizza, "bro" beer and "80's neon" clothing*. This was a D.I.Y. event in it's purest form, not many boatshoes here, draw a conclusion on that as you will but my conclusion is big up to Positive Action and let's see more of this M(ilk).

*any significance to a real company is purely coincidental

"Black Time are retiring from playing live after their US shows in October this year, just like the Beatles in 1966. Frankly it’s getting impossible to make ourselves heard above the screaming of teenage girls, and I increasingly want to stay at home shooting up heroin, reading the Tibetan book of the dead and making tape loops on my Revox A77.

This Saturday therefore will be the last chance for Londoners to see Lemmy trip over his guitar lead and smack himself in the mouth with the microphone, Mr Stix take his shirt off and laugh at Lemmy tripping up, Janie Too Bad looking sassy and wishing she was somewhere more classy, and Lowdown swearing at his delay pedal.

Hipshakes CD-r 2nd Album review (by Chief Sosati AKA Mr STiX)

I originally envisioned to do this as a track by track review but then things got in the way (beer, 4 track experiments, skating, sun, rugby), so I'm gonna have to just give you the highlights and overview of this here CD-R(ock). As I listened through the CD with my reviewers ear, I tried to keep the bias at bay, but after track 5 I was sucked into a-Hipshakes-Bakewell-Tart, with Andrew and Dan's sugar'n'spice, pop-top and all three's rockin' rhythm pastry!

The first track that really caught my ear and took it from foot tapping to thigh bashing was "Wasted Life", many things can be attributed to wasting your life mainly ex-girlfriends, managers, landlords, this is the song to envision them and scream. Baited by the guitar slide intro, hooked by the chorus and kicked by the beat. One of many to follow in the catchy as fuck department.

What I like most about this 2nd album is the sense of song writing maturity that inevitably comes through in a band that has done as much as they have in a short time, this is exemplified in "Days Of Destiny", which starts off with an acoustic intro which gets you thinkin' here comes The Art**c M*nk*ys ballad until Brucee Baby's fill comes in to crush your twee bollox. "Searchin" also gives rise to a cool breakdown without too much studio wank knob tweaking.

In the middle of the record is a song which has the working title "???????", which I'm sure means they not sure what it is and not some poncey Dalstonesque electro title, on this track all I can say is, take a breath, go up on't moors and psyche out.

A real good sign of a great band is after having seen them you have some of their tunes buzzing round your head the next day and "Not Like I've Had Before" is a perfect example, I dare you not to sing along to "oh yea " .."alright" secondtime round. If that wasn’t enough, they hit you with "T-shirt" straight after, which starts with a floortom Boom! Boom! straight into this rock pop Bakewell gem, sing it FUCKERSSS!!!! Apparently it's about something as mundane as a band shirt. "Bruce’s Party Song" is exactly like only one's mind can conjure up (this goes to people who have met The Man, The Myth, The Legend), Gloria chords, but who cares, go party with Bruce as it builds and crashes like any good Bruce drinkin' session!

The album ends as you would after a good rock'n'roll cricket game, take bat in hand and head off into the moors once again with "Rovin Down The River", writing credits go to the ginger on the stix, beast man Bruce, on this one.

So there you have it, an insight into the life of 3 young scamps, as they try to get by in Sheffield, where I'm sure frustration is a plenty, as their Sheffield peers try sandwich them sonically into a Human League, Pulp and Art*c M*nk*ys mash up, as that's the only way those knobs can make any sense out of the strange garage pop pissing in their ears.

SO WE FOLLOWED THE BOAT SHOES NAVIGATED THROUGH THE NEON AND ARRIVED AT OUR DESTINATION - AN ALLEYWAY WITH A DOORWAY LEADING TO THE PARTAYYY!!!!!!

BEFORE I GO INTO WHO PLAYED AND IF IT SUCKED ECT I NEED TO PUT ON MY IAN MACKAYE HAT AND MOAN ABOUT SOMETHINGS I NOTICED.

THE CIRCLE IS GETTING TIGHTER

Will you ever be able to make music and live off it circa Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr ?

With the onslaught of the download generation I think not!
Not that I'm cynical about downloading I just think its become a lot harder for independent bands to make an actual living out of their music. I've played some shows with bands who purely live on the road and you would think after touring non-stop for 3 years they would build some sort of following but in my experience this is not true. It could be argued that U2 was playing down the road,the final of X-Factor was on or some other crap the promoter will sling at you while he pats his pocket to reveal lack of funds.

I think that before downloads the only way you could hear these bands was when they came through your town. These mythical bands that where whispered about in the main stream fanatically written about in fanzines.

You had no choice but to go check it out.

These days bands are discussed, downloaded and scrutinised before even starting on there first tour.

Is this a bad thing ?

I don't think so. It just pushes those who really wanna make music and tour a little bit harder. Juggling day jobs time off work in order to go on those 2 weeks of bliss where people don't show up, cars break down but hell does it ever beat working.

This in effect tightens the circle within which we roam - people promoting bands, starting bands doing labels etc. have less chance of makin' money than they did before so pure enthusiasm reigns supreme.

Conversely those that are still "aiming for that big ice cream cone in the sky"
Record companies now have to make there revenue through advertising

This is my own little observation I have made over the last couple of days.Loads of adverts these days seem to feature up and coming indie bands selling everything from phones to sunglasses even Iggy and Alice are selling insurance. The days of Guns'n'Rose's decadence are well and truly over.

In conclusion I think the state of the music we make ,what we do is secret ,is becoming a tighter unit people are working harder for there art and harder for there beer whilst the other plebs are nothing more than musical organ monkey peddling there woes for da man.

Last night I was at Trash Kit (still fuckin ruling, they rule so much they try get feedback out of a violin!!!!) and Teen Sheikhs (also still rulin', getting drunk, breaking strings, talking trash, losing cash but moulding it all with some catchy songs and melody)

Anyway unfortunately just before the Teen Sheikhs went on news filtered through that Michael Jackson might be dead ......... this soured the evening as myself and many other punters began to realise what a shock this was to the system.

Personally Michael Jackson has always been in my psyche. My first stirrings into music owe much to watching the "Thriller" video and being slightly frightened by the monsters but hooked on the pulsating beat and moves that permeated beneath the zombie exterior, then came "Beat it", "The Way You Make Me Feel", "Dirty Diana", "BAD".

Towards the 90's, when most of us in our 30's (or late-teens/early 20's) hit our rebellious grunged era, and my interest waned a bit, especially with the ultra tacky "Earth Song" and "Heal The World", even though I still rocked out to "Black or White" and "Do You Remember The Time".

Into the late 90's & noughties(such a crap term), I started going into his back catalogue and loving the Jackson 5 stuff and ealry solo albums, have faint inklings of my parents blasting tunes like, "Can You Feel It", "I wanna Rock with You", "Shake Your Body (Down to the Ground)" and "Blame it on the Boogie", at their christmas parties when I was only knee high .

This, in conclusion, brings me to realise the real sadness of Michael's passing, it's not just the fact that he's gone and has left a colossal back catalogue, it is more the people of his ilk are getting less and less, the hard workers and the stars that last for decades and not just a 15 sec youtube video. I am constantly appaled by the lack of artistic commitment certain artists have performers cancelling left right and centre due to colds or an ailing pet. If you did that to James Brown or Joseph Jackson for that matter you would have been fined a bunch of wages and got your ass kicked until you reached the next show.
This probably highlights the madness which befell him in the years that followed imagine from the age of 5 -18 your rehearsing, touring, rain or shine sickness and health. Everyone's trying to be your best friend or girlfriend but nobody knows you. If Britney grew up in Michael's era that bitch would not have any where near K-Fed or a pair of shears.
So it is therefore for this reason I feel sad, sad that yet another important cog in what made music so great and alive has perished and that the money spinning glamour puss acts of today can get even more money for less.

i am still pretty speechless
um, fuck, well the nerves set in in anticipation for gigs like this, i have not seen many reunion shows by bands, purely coz i am too young or either because i like shit bands that usually split up for good and are never gonna reunite, ever . . . . . . .
i did however see Bad Brains play in '07, i dunno wot i was expecting (backflips by a 50 year old HR?) anyways, but that was definitely not the same at all

i was intrigued by the short notice announcements of support bands, Grails, who i have never really gotten into, but have only heard good stuff about - they played an awesome atmosphere setting set - smoked out stage and mad strobe lighting to the bonged out riffs not unlike Pelican or Russian Circles - total Floyd obsessed thick grooveness
next were Harvey Milk, whose again i have read loads about and never heard - i eagerly downloaded their most recent album ('Life... The Best Game in Town'/"and death goes to the winner!") total Melvins style drone metal sludge, though perhaps even more droney and sludgey? and fair dues to existence and joe preston i guess (for melvins comparisons)

and the moment we were all waiting/waited for, arrived

the Lizard explodes, 1st song, Monkey Trick and Yow is already crowd surfing like the sweaty ravenous preacher he is, Denison's guitar sounds like a sawmill amplified, Sims' bass, well, let's just say my dick is still hard, and Mac is just as fucken tight as brad wilk channeling bonham's ghost (for instance?), this is all gonna sound like flabber gasted mumble, but like i said i am still speechless and stunned and still can't believe i fucken lived this . . . .

WHY BERLIN SUX ,A PERSONAL journey

This weekend i was fortunate to go play Berlin with blacktime ,im not being sarcastic ,not yet, as any oppurtunity to go play another country is fucking awesome, however this uber cool city bit us in the melon leaving a gaping mental wound that will take a while to heal. Heres the chain of events that went from rocking like Van Halen circa 1984 period to sucking like a Sammy Hager tribute band.

It all started after the gig(this gig ruled loads of people dancing and rocking) in Munster , at some point in the night not to sure when ,due to beer,it went from cool ladies and lads rocking out to black lips,gories ect to uber kool cockheads rocking out to the kills. The " trendy kunt wankey ness" of the clientele was further cemented by the arsehole that greeted me when i went backstage.

Basically it was some tool with a fringe telling Lemmy Caution (singer of blacktime) how we were trying to sound like the babyshambles , we not sure if this was supposed to be funny or if this twat had no ears.
Either way when it comes to music people have different opinions ,interpretations which is understandable but this prick kept repeating himself and then would add in other gems with each repetition .

Anyway ounce he fucked off we had to get our gear out of the venue to where we were staying this involved pushing through a crowd of coked up ,dressed up trendy pricks who didnt see the need in gettting out of your way .

After this we went back to where we were staying and slept till 8am as we had to catch a train to Berlin.........

The train ride to Berlin almost tore to shreds my love of train travel basically our tickets had no reservation but every other german did so each 20 mins to an hour ounce we had a found a seat
some german couple would say "sorry we have a reservation" and hush us out ,and this was done to the letter what i mean is if there is 2 spare seats behind us and we sitting in 2 seats
they would have to sit where it is stated instead of , i dont know ,being complacent and sitting behind us and then obviously asking us to move when it got full.Iknow it sounds like im moaning but this went on for 3 hours so we ended up drinking some beer inbetween the carriages on the floor due to our unwillingness to play anymore musical train seating .

Getting into Berlin we met up with 2bad(bass player of blacktime) and went our seperate ways before the show me and lowdown went to the park and slept ,we also watched a football game and saw an awesome goal .It was while in the park that I noticed that it was mainley full of trendy english, americans and germans ,berlin is uber koel!!!!!!!!

When we all met up and arrived at the show we encountered the longest souncheck in the world this was due to 2 factors

weird amp configertaion ,which consisted of a massive bass amp and two guitar amps that looked like they had been cut in half ,its was only the speaker section of the amp ,the actual heads were in some racking ,so alot of time was spent trying to connect it all together,plugging un plugging and twiddling knobs
a soundman that was maybe a bit to professional for us ,fair enough he triend to get ze perfekt sound but it was in the cant polish a turd category .

so 2 hours was spent figuring out the amps ,the next hour and a half with the soundman telling us that it sounded shit turn up the bass, play a song ,no its shit take the treble off the guitar,no its shit, turn down the bass no its shit play repeat play repeat.....until Caution,thank fuck finally send i give up so we downed tools and left our sound in the hands of the gods.

We then left the club got some graze and tried to focus on the fact that the journey in sucked ,and the sound check sucked but the show is gonna rock ,cause thats how it usually works.

Well the show sucked a fat one,and it wasnt the fact that we fucked up some songs it was more the fact that besides the soundman telling us during soundcheck it was shit ,some punter told us during the gig it sounded shit whilst doing wanker and yawning gestures. Also in between each song you could a german fart thats how rawkus the response was,note the sarcasm.

After the gig as we were packing up the soundman came over to tell us how shit the sound was even though when i came to play the drums the snare was now miced up when it previously had not been ,and he didnt do much to twiddle the amp while we were on stage like i said i know he tried get it perfect but there was no point berating us after the gig of how bad our/his sound was .

After we sulked/drank/groaned/did a shot/laughed pitifully backstage this was only punctuated with Caution going out to maybe sell merch chat ect.

Only to be approached blacktime fan (i say fan cause he knew alot about the band eg: our records released and to be released ) where the following ensued

He wanted to knowwhy our set was so short after noticing on the setlist we had more songs ? ,ummm cause no one clapping and someone told us we sound shit ,so we counted our loses.
Upon hearing his knowledge of blacktime Mr Caution asked if he wanted to buy a cassette tape which had most of the stuff that is gonna be on the split record we doing with ty seagull ,whic he enquired about ,he said no,upon enquiring whether this was due to not having a cassette player he then told Caution , that he loved mixtapes and tapes in general go figure german logic
He then started looking at the comic that was for sale ( a comic done by caution and tony mortis from los raw gosbels) and after scanning it cover to cover he asked how much ,upon hearing it was 2 euros he said no thanks he had to drive tommorow and need to use that money on petrol ,guess he was driving the most fule efficient car known to humanity.

After this delightful encounter we informed the promoter that we wanted to leave and go to where we were staying ,we then proceed to said place ,through a park in the pouring rain ,yes it sucked but compared to what had come before it was not noticed that much.

Our accomodation was the usual bed,couch mattress affiar however the owner was not there but his dog was ,the dog was about labrador size and build but didnt take to kindly to strangers in his abode so he barked at us and then slep right by the door of the room we stayed and and would growl and if you were lucky bite you as you walked past , there was no flesh pentration in the bite just a nip but still stress inducing.

Im gonna simplify the next cahin of events as re-living these moments are makin me ill ...

woke up got bitten by the dog again
waited for a bus to the airport that never came ,no one told us why ,there was no signage either people that were waiting there just left without telling there fellow travellers how long they been waiting ect bllllaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
finally getting to the airport via two trains and a bus only to stand behind a massive queue for 20 mins

After that we finally got back to london and them played a awesome show later that night with a band called love is all ,that were fucking awesome ,so all was not lost.

by this time next week i will have witnessed, who have been mentioned as, one of the best live bands in the world ever! this time last week i had just woken up in sunny brighton . . . this week, london is gloomy yet still warm, what can that mean?

the (first? &) last time i was at the Forum was to see FUGAZI's last show, which changed my life for sure, i have not been listening to the Lizard for long, about 2 or 3 years now only, considering their hayday was the late 80's to late 90's, but the impact of their music ethically, physically and yes, emotionally, is overpowering, disturbing in that all so you want more kind of way (like a good horror film) and just plain goddamn mutha fuckin' genius
.......... so by this time next week, i will know better and hopefully a further write up follows if i am not in A+E or have just been sectioned

So its that time again in the cultural calender where the path to a record deal and uber cool status , is now dotted with dusty tape recorders and stick figurine flyers and record sleeves designed after a saterday nights excess involving a red wine stain and a newspaper from a kebab.

So as the title suggest is this D.I.Y ethic or just plain lazy .

Recordings:

The basteon of recordings these days is the 4 track recording gone (for now) are studios and stuck up engineers in terrible "tool" t-shirts . Now im all for this and ,Yes, I record on a 4 track and im mainley attracted by the endless possibilities of what I can get out of it ,mixing ,bouncing tracks, recording one mic here and one mic there ...thats what i get off on or to paraphrase Lars Ulrich in Some kind of monster Documentry thats what gets my dick Hard!!! .

Some bands however go out of thier way to make it sound as shit as possible as opposed to making what you record on sound as good as possible . They seem to record something in there jumper in a rehearsal and put it on myspace and then lament to uncool hacks on how they dont care and just recorded it in a bathroom,kitchen, mini cab office,kebab shop ect. As I said this nearly always sets off my dork alarm cause like i said they just being lazy and tight ,ok recession and we all scrappling for cash but i managed to clamer a meager recording set up together through borrowin and getting stuff off e-bay . Not following the age old path of "Yea we spent it all getting fucked up " like your motley crue but without the bank balance and 80's hedonism.

Flyers,record covers and band names :

Flyers these days are sucking balls, Pettibon would be stabbing himself with his pencil if he's seen what i seen .....hand drawn no thought rubbish ,which only shows me your music's gonna suck if you put this much effort into promoting it . The D.I.Y scenes of say the SST era all had awesome flyers/record covers to go with it I belive theres like coffee table books showing all these small works of art desgined to get people to your shows and buy your records(money is useful to put out more records and do tours)...anti parents ,anti cops anti boredom its all there ..
not just something scribbled on the back of something . Its just lazy and non creative .Same goes for band names these days
All seem to have been snatched from a blinfolded stab at a 80's TV guide ...I think i saw in some listings a band called Nicole Kidman what the fuck is your drummer called Tom Cruizzzeee or the bassist called White Weedy Ozzy or W.W.O for short . Again no thought and just lazy they dont tell me shit about the band and what they about ......all this ranting could justbe showing my age as 30 is around the corner and im no longer welcome in a shoreditch warehouse but whatever its shebeen scenes blog so click back on your browser if you dis -agree or print it out and write a witty flyer on the back of the printed page .

Show will definitely be done by 11 due to Stoke-Newington-Guardian-Readers-With-Prams curfew so should be fine for any of you trying to get last buses/trains. Universal Orders had to pull out so the poster is wrong but apparently Trash Kit are good. Mr Caution & co. will have copies of the Los Raw Gospels ‘La Fiesta De La Muerte’ LP for sale along with the comic Lemmy and Tony do (issue #2 out in 2012) and some Black Time stuff."
